A controversial bill tabled in the UK to legalise same-sex marriage in overseas territories including TCI has evoked a mixed response across the region. Insiders say the private members’ bill – laid by LGBTQ rights activist Lord Michael Cashman – has little chance of success, with one British government official telling the Weekly News the UK has “bigger fish to fry”. But the move has once again exposed divides between London and some residents in Caribbean territories who hold deep conservative beliefs and feel the move flies in the face of their Christian principles. Indeed, Premier Washington Misick told the Weekly News on Thursday: “This has always been an emotive issue here based on social mores and religious conviction. “My government will be guided by the views of electors but I think equality before the law is possible while still preserving the biblical principle of marriage.”
