“Diverse” – the new third-gender option that Germany has approved for official identification records including birth certificates – means “other” or “various” and can be reversed at any point. The pioneer bill passed by the country’s government following a Supreme Court ruling last year will take effect by the end of this year, subject to parliamentary approval, making Germany the first European country officially to recognize sexual diversity. “ When a parent comes to register his newborn at the town hall, he will have the choice between three boxes: male, female and ‘diverse ’,” explain Le Point.
