A lesbian couple say they are fleeing Italy due to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s far-right government’s crackdown on the rights of LGBTQ+ parents. Chiara and Christine are the mothers of six-year-old Arturo, and Christine is pregnant with the couple’s second son, due early next year. But as Chiara told Agence France-Presse (AFP), while she is registered as Arturo’s mother on his birth certificate, she is not his biological parent. Under Meloni’s government, it’s looking increasingly likely that her parental rights could be challenged. “It’s a nightmare,” the 46-year-old, who asked that her family’s last name not be revealed, said of the situation. She described the decision she and Christine made to relocate to Spain with their son as the family’s “only escape route.”
