Polish court backs citizenship for LGBT couple’s child

A court in Poland has upheld the groundbreaking registration of a child raised by a same-sex couple. The decision by the Provincial Court in the southern city of Krakow to reject a protest by prosecutors and allow two Polish women living in Britain to be named as the parents of a child registered as a Polish citizen is the first time such a move has been allowed. Predominantly Catholic Poland does not recognize same-sex marriage or parenthood. The court’s spokeswoman, Judge Anna Szkodzinska, told The Associated Press Wednesday the decision can only be overturned by the Supreme Administrative Court, which, however, was the court that last year gave the unprecedented go-ahead for the official registration of the child’s British birth certificate in Poland, which was done in October.
