This year proved to be the deadliest on record for transgender and nonbinary people, with at least 45 recorded deaths in 2021. The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) said at least 45 transgender and gender-nonconforming people have been killed this year, but used the term “at least” as many of these types of incidents go unreported or misreported. Previously, the highest number of deaths among transgender or gender-nonconforming people that HRC tracked was in 2020, when at least 44 people were killed. “Each of these 45 names represents a whole person and a rich life torn from us by senseless violence, driven by bigotry and transphobia and stoked by people who hate and fear transgender people and the richness of their experience,” said Joni Madison, interim president of HRC, in a statement. Most recently, Marquiisha Lawrence, a 28-year-old Black transgender women was fatally shot in Greenville, S.C. on Nov. 4. According to the Greenville County coroner, Lawrence was found dead in her home after an altercation with one or more individuals. The Greenville County coroner’s office and sheriff’s office are continuing to investigate.
