China has opened its first dedicated clinic for adolescents and children who wish to change their gender. The clinic, at the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai, will offer evaluations, diagnosis and interventions to help young people understand sexuality and improve family relations, according to state media. It will integrate clinical departments and “serve as a bridge between transgender children, parents, doctors and society”, said the Global Times, a party mouthpiece. Doctors said the clinic was necessary after seeing cases including an adolescent girl who liked playing with cars, disliked wearing skirts and suffered anxiety and depression after puberty.
