Biden Admin. to Terminate Flawed Asylum Agreement with El Salvador

President-elect Joe Biden said he will terminate a flawed asylum agreement with El Salvador, the Human Rights Watch reported. LGBT groups within the country experience violence and discrimination from churches and authorities. The flawed agreement allows immigration authorities in the U.S. to transfer non-Salvadoran asylum seekers to El Salvador, the HRW reported. “The Attorney General’s Office in El Salvador released statistics in January 2020 indicating it had tabulated 692 cases of violence against LGBT and intersex people in five years,” according to an HRW report from January of 2021. LGBT groups face forms of violence including “acts of torture, inhuman or degrading treatment, excessive use of force, illegal and arbitrary arrests and other forms of abuse, much of it committed by public security agents” in addition to discrimination, according to the report. Nayib Bukele, El Salvador’s current president, originally supported LGBT rights, but showed his opposition to marriage equality, sexual diversity at work and legal gender recognition while running for office, the HRW reported.
